I was the lead that day of the memorial formation flight. It was an honour to pay tribute to a fellow aviator in this special way. The missing man formation is specific to aviators and symbolizes that one of us has departed “upstairs” and the gap remains that he has left. It always affects me when I hear of the passing of a man who came half way around the world to fight for the freedom of people he never knew. His survival after the war and his long life was made possible by the unselfish acts of the men of Texel who recued him from the water. We were proud to be able to afford his family this sign of respect and thanks.
